Potentially Disruptive Makefile Changes

Hi guys,

After a bit of editing, I've merged Jamie's makefile revisions [1].
I'm not entirely convinced yet that it's not going to be noisy, but so
far it's looking pretty good. That said, please do break it, as
makefiles tend to be quite temperamental. Merging into master so it
gets a bit more attention before release time.
