Thanks guys! That was the issue. I was also passing a comment "My personal
passdb"  to init which pass did not like. I thought we could have multiple
databases and comments would aid in identifying the database (saw this as a
n example somwehere"

Like Ryan mentioned,

pass init <gpg-id>

works.
