Here's POSIX: "A <dollar-sign> ( '$' ) shall be an anchor when used as
the last character of an entire BRE. The implementation may treat a
<dollar-sign> as an anchor when used as the last character of a
subexpression."

Yeah ... ambiguity: Both behaviours are correct ("may").
