I'm a little confused that a message sent in early March only seemed to
reach the list a week ago, but nevertheless — thanks all for your
extremely helpful responses on this.  By far the most convenient option
(if your distribution supports it) is indeed to

  apt install vim-redact-pass

.. after which a security message pops up every time you invoke 'pass
edit', letting you know that the relevant leaky features have been
disabled.
