From fernando.viola at gmail.com Tue Sep 15 08:16:04 2026 From: fernando.viola at gmail.com (Fernando Viola) Date: Tue, 15 Sep 2026 10:16:04 +0200 Subject: hdiutil deprecation warning on macOS 27 from tmpdir() in darwin.sh Message-ID: Hi, Since upgrading to macOS 27 (Golden Gate), running any "pass git ..." command (e.g. "pass git pull") now prints the following warning before executing: hdiutil: WARNING: 'hdiutil attach -nomount ...' is deprecated. Please use 'diskutil image attach --noMount ...' instead. I tracked this down to src/platform/darwin.sh, where tmpdir() creates a ramdisk using hdid: DARWIN_RAMDISK_DEV="$(hdid -drivekey system-image=yes -nomount 'ram://32768' | cut -d ' ' -f 1)" This is called from cmd_git() via "tmpdir nowarn" every time a git subcommand is run through pass, even for read-only operations like "pull" that never touch decrypted data. In macOS 27, hdiutil is deprecated in favor of "diskutil image", which now covers attach, create, resize, info and chpass. hdid still works today, but triggers this warning on every invocation. I don't have a confirmed working replacement command for the ram:// ramdisk case (unclear whether "diskutil image attach" supports the ram:// scheme and the equivalent of "-drivekey system-image=yes"), but wanted to flag this early given how visible the warning is (it appears on every single "pass git" call). Has anyone already looked into a diskutil image based replacement for this ramdisk creation on Darwin? In trying to install all the dependencies I noticed that the tree dependency currently points to http://mama.indstate.edu/users/ice/tree/ which is defunct. I'm fairly sure the current page for this software is https://oldmanprogrammer.net/source.php?dir=projects/tree because: 1. that's where the brew script points to (https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/blob/4beb9e59facb00935a83fa23ffeaa1cc6c2e7722/Formula/t/tree.rb) 2. The software was originally by Chris Baker which is also referenced on https://oldmanprogrammer.net I've attached a small patch. Separately, on the hdiutil topic: I also use pass on macOS via Homebrew and I do see the same `hdiutil` warning. That reference isn't in `darwin.sh` itself (as I mentioned in my previous email) but rather in the installed copy at `/opt/homebrew/Cellar/pass/1.7.4/lib/password-store/platform.sh`; the line is otherwise identical: `DARWIN_RAMDISK_DEV="$(hdid -drivekey system-image=yes -nomount 'ram://32768' | cut -d ' ' -f 1)"`. Right now it's just an annoying warning, but if Apple decides to remove `hdid` permanently, it will no longer be possible to use `pass` with Git.
