For Debian I currently use this cludge, which is totally wrong and terrible:
curl -s https://anonscm.debian.org/git/collab-maint/wireguard.git/refs/
| sed -n 's/.*debian\/\([^ ]*\)-experimental[0-9]\+.*/\1/p' | head -n
1
