[PATCHES] improve extensions support

Hello again,

I managed to review this, despite the incorrect submission format.
Because you didn't submit correctly, I'm not able to provide a reply
to each line inline with the email.

Due to the generally low code quality and carelessness, I will not be
merging this series. However, the basic ideas seem like good ones, and
I'll look into adopting these with a less offensive implementation.
