Did you run `pass init` first to set up a new password-store?

Yes, the --multiline option to the insert and edit subcommands allow
you to append whatever text you want to each file. A lot of people
follow a structure like:

email: link@[redacted].com
security question: What is the air speed velocity of an unladen
swallow?
